Ravings of a Classical Scientist

This blog is the result of a rational minded person looking at many aspects of the world around us. Warning: This blog is not for everyone, ignorance is bliss, so don't get angry at me for ruining it.

Holidays

There are only 2 days left in the year, yet I can't help but think of today as Friday. Maybe it's because I've been traveling, maybe it's because I place no particular value on the number after the month part of the date. But when I think about it, New Years is one of the only secular holidays! Shouldn't I be "pushing" it? It's better than St. Blabla or xmas (although I'm trying to replace that with Festivus). Maybe I feel it is useless and counter productive to attack religion on it most positive note: a holiday.

A GREAT gift!! (Evolution)

The Dover evolution court case has ended and with a bang (here)! The judge made a broad and elaborate opinion on his ruling that will have national implications. The exerts I have read from the opinion sound like they could have come from me! Now this is a gift I won't forget. Thank you John Jones!!

Now the Dover institute and other morons will try and rephrase the fight as an academic freedom debate. This is a clever tactic by the morons since it is plausible in the public square. As is obvious to us, it's a ridiculous argument since there is no published paper on ID. Well, "the price of liberty is eternal vigilance." For now we celebrate!

Sad News

Hi all. I'm sadden to say we lost the pregnancy. We found out on Friday and have been dealing with complications ever since. We have come to terms with it. We know it was better this way since the pregnancy was no longer viable. Better sooner than later, but it still hurts.

The US and Kyoto

It is a funny sort of hypocrisy when Paul Martin bashes the US over not signing Kyoto. The "holier than thou" argument doesn't work with Paul Martin's record. The facts are that Canada's emissions are up 24% and the US's is only up 13%! Which is more important; a signature on a symbolic paper or actually cutting emissions.

A note: this reduction is mostly (almost entirely) due to individual states cutting not the Federal government.

Consequences of Globalization on an ignorant population

I go this in an email and thought it ran true:

Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) and continued his search for a good paying CANADIAN JOB. At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in CANADA....
(plus most of us shop at walmart where nothing is made in CANADA)

If the general population had an idea how economics worked they would try and buy Canadian products even if it cost a few percent more.
