Ravings of a Classical Scientist

Parallelisms of any god and a childs father

I have noticed that there are amazing parallels between how a child views his father and the way adults view their god.

When we are young our parents always know what we want/need before we do. They mystically know what is good for us and they lead us through a world that is beyond our comprehension. They do so effortlessly and we come to just expect that they will guide us, fix our boo-boos and watch over us so no harm will come to us.

Once we get older we start to understand our parents world and it becomes less and less mysterious. we also realize our parents are fallible. So what do some people do to adapt? Create a substitute. Make him everyone's father, make him infallible and make him reside in a world that is beyond my comprehension. Ahhh... back to my childhood.

Why the bible?

Another question I've often posed is why the bible? Different religions spring up every time someone adds a book to a current religion (Muslim = Christian + Mohammed's book). So why does the bible continue to have such a devout following?

The bible most Christians use is translated and known to have been modified (Emperor Constantine did it before he adopted Christianity). It isn't the oldest book we have. It also isn't the most vague. So why do people believe it?
I guess they just want to. This is fine, just don't critisize others if they want to believe in The Odessey.

It seems a natural course of "spiritual" evolution that humans would go from polytheism to monotheism and end up at athism. Guess we still have a to wait a bit.

How can the bible be taken litteraly at all!?!

It's a simple story. Adam and Eve have 2 (male) children and one kills the other. This leaves Dad, mom and son. How did those three people multiply? Did the son sleep with his mother? Did Adam and Eve have a daughter? Who impregnated her? Yuk!! So why do people believe this is how humanity started? Do religious people really prefer massive incest to evolution!?!

I guess the lesson is: if you want to believe don't ask!

what is a classical scientist

Or more accurately what am I trying to say by this. Well it is my opinion that the manner in which people get their "truths" can be broken down into two types: the "classical scientist" or the "religious type". That is to say that just because someone is a scientist in profession doesn't mean they can't be a "religious type"
Description
The "religious type" puts things that they "feel" and believe must be true on the "table" and then from that draw their "truths." For instance most faiths start with "god must exist so....". The ideas that usually get on the table tend to come form one's parents and social environment.
The "classical scientist" doesn't have the luxury of this ability to place believes first and draw truth. The classical scientist must place the data of experiments on the table and draws his beliefs from them. This severely restricts what he can believe since if the data on the table doesn't fit a belief it must be abandoned. This means that the "classical scientist's" beliefs might change but his base of knowledge is ever growing and verifiable by anyone anywhere and independent of even human existence.

This is why science is always right (though by science I mean the physical sciences). Putting what you believe first and then looking at the world with that lens is a very skewed way to look at things. The reason is soo trivial it is ignored... what if you are wrong in your belief! Faith is just that belief without proof and so it is by it's very definition prone to being very wrong! You can believe that the world is flat (in everyday life this appears true) but it won;'t make the world flat! So if you lived your life never traveling too far because you where worried about falling off the planet you'd never see the whole world. Get it?

Evangelical President

It scares me to no end that bush can be presadent of the most powerful nation on the planet and be completely contradictory. He is sworn to uphold the constitution of the USA which clearly states that there is no state church, yet at every instance he "rules" with his religious views! It would be fine if he was a private religious type but to be an outspoken religious zealot! That only makes his war's look exactly like religious wars!
For more I suggest watching http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jesus/view/

Why are people so easily swayed to religion? Hitler believed that people are much more likely to believe a large lie than a small one. How does any reasonable person distinguish between a person who is doing "gods" work and a nut who is mentally ill? Most serial killers honestly believe that they are not doing anything wrong at all. So how do you tell the difference? So much as i can tell it only depends on whether you agree with him!
