Zombies!

We've created zombies! Cool! They say they will soon test it humans, too bad it won't work. It can't. It can work for a dog, but if a human is dead for a while it's soul will leave the body. Haha... did I have you going ;-)
It will be fun to see the book-huggers (the superset of bible huggers including all people who's beliefs come from an arbitrary book, including scientologists :) muddle there way through the idea of a soul if people are "frozen" for a while. Do there souls hover around or go to heaven/hell until they are revived? Or maybe they go to some bars in Limbo, they must have interesting drinks.

Intolerance, Same-Sex Marriage and Old Books

The same-sex marriage bill (C-38) makes (in some peoples views) those who don't want to marry same-sex couples bigots or even in violation of the law (excluding religious institutions). Moreover, once it is law it therefore becomes against the law to speak out against same-sex marriages and homosexuality all together. But what about those people who get their beliefs from old books? Suddenly they can't preach passages in their chosen holy book since they are against the law. GREAT! Moreover it's happened before. Jews, Christians and Muslims have passages in their chosen books about other faiths and it has lead to many wars (if not almost all) in the past. That's not to say these books only advocate intolerance, they don't. They do in some places and contradict themselves in others (but that's no surprise to any of you). So although I don't like the government involved in peoples religion I don't feel it's wrong to not allow them to spread hate just because their chosen book has a few passages. That goes for other-faith intolerance, life-style intolerance (including same-sex marriage, divorce and woman's rights) or any other. If someone stood in the public area and said, "women where created to be the servants of man" (common interpretation of Genesis) and so they should have no rights as it used to be, he'd be humiliated and mocked. So why not the same response to homosexuals... I speculate fear of change. We'll too bad.
Luckily, although we "recognize the supremacy of god" we are a country of many faiths and so god seems to have many (contradictory) laws so we keep it out of real world politics, except for lip-service.

Laws from 'god' are from the jungle

When religious people quote that "..it's the way it's been and was given by god," this fits in exactly with what people want out of religion: purpose. Religious people are almost all looking for a purpose. I don't think it dawns on them that the very idea of purpose is meaningless. What is the 'meaning' (or purpose) of life, is an ill-defined question. What it really is saying is that this is the law we've had for a long time, which is naive an idiotic. Religious people seem to have a strange view of the past, like it's always through a 'rosy' lens. The truth is that life is better now (in first world countries that is) than it's ever been! We live longer, are bigger and have access to more information than ever.

But I am hopeful that in the future people will continue turn religion (a rigorous central system of dictated beliefs) in to spirituality (a personal interpretation of beliefs). Many modern communities are defined by this transformation since it seems to be necessary to allow scientists to prosper (which seems like a reasonable explanation why no religious society has had significant scientific advancements). As with all things the marvels of science and the instinct to survive and save your children will overpower (mostly) your religious doctrine. If not they will die. A good example is the religious people not believing in immunization (even during an outbreak of Rubella),. So I'll guess they'll be selected out, too bad they don't believe in that.

Unsurprisingly Annoyed at Canada

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised but the date threw me off. In our (Canada's) charter it says at the very beginning that we recognize the supremacy of god! Well I guess I can't endorse it completely with noting, "except the first line..."

It really shouldn't have bothered me, but it was written in 1982!?! I guess I won't make a fuss since as long as we pay lip service to the religious people they'll stay (mostly) quite. But if challenged we must take it out! They can use it!

Well, I think in the end dragging people's religion out of the closet into the public arena will only muddy it up since in the end the rich aren't religious, but will use it to control them.
