Ravings of a Classical Scientist

This blog is the result of a rational minded person looking at many aspects of the world around us. Warning: This blog is not for everyone, ignorance is bliss, so don't get angry at me for ruining it.

Political Commentary in Computer Games

I thought this was really funny. It just goes to show that programmers have strong political opinions. I'm a little surprised Microsoft let them publish it, but great for them.

Fusion Power and the Economist Magazine

Through the magic of marketing I received 4 free issues of The Economist. I found it had some great articles until I got to this one about fusion. The idea that fusion research money could be better spent on alternate fuel research is just silly. All the energy on the planet came or comes from fusion and so perhaps mimicking the process that's powered the earth for it's lifetime is a good one to mimic. No alternate fuel source can offer what fusion power can. If the US spends about 1/2 a trillion dollars on the military and most of that is for them to secure energy sources (such as oil). If they had fusion power they could cut back on their military spending since they wouldn't have to worry about power generation (also assuming they can get off the gasoline for car use or at least reduce by hybridization). But then anytime an economist has talked about a social or scientific topic I'm usually terribly ashamed to know they have a university degree. If the project doesn't have a corporation getting more money or if government is doing it then it must be a bad idea. Narrow minded and short sighted, period.

You ain't what you eat

It seems some new research one twins has made a solid link to what I have suspected for a while: gene's matter. The article shows that it is your gene's that primarily decide on your blood cholesterol not the amount of exercise or the amount of consumed cholesterol. This would be great news to the pharmaceutical industry, since then the only really way to get your cholesterol down is statin drugs, except that for statin drugs it seems the treatment can be worse than the problem! And for those of us who see the flaws in the links from blood cholesterol levels to coronary Heart disease we'll sit this round of bad science on the sidelines.

At least this study will hopefully stop the pseudosciencentific copout of: it's because the French drink wine! Bad science and trickery.

Condolences

My heart goes out to those in London. I hope the book-hugging barbarian zelots are found quietly before they have a chance to strike again or do what happened with the Madrid bombers. Bastards!

Unsurprising update and the Laws they want(ed)

With all the supreme court talk I did some reading on Roe v. Wade. I noticed something that strikes me to the very cord of my beliefs. It was an update on the case and it turns out that Jane Roe has converted to Christianity and now calls to have abortion made illegal again. Women!

Its a good thing that the U.S. is a country of Laws and not people first since people are too easily influenced by magic tricks, mythologies and charismatic people. If the Schiavo case has a moral to the story it's that laws must supersede the people who are involved in them (or that Delay can play politics as good as any redneck who really doesn't know any better).
